Sian 1/2

Posted by Ruok On February - 28 - 2006

Its funny how I have changed from dreading the day the ad will air, to wanting the ad to air as soon as possible. I think the main reason for the change in attitude is that I got really sick of anticipating the airing of the damn TVC for so long (almost 9 months wtf?!).

If its cancelled/postponed indefinitely, please let me know, cuz then at least I can tell peeps whom I have told before to look out for it to stop looking out. I can also stop putting it as a reference whenever I go for auditions. It will also bring some peace to mind and a close to the chapter as well.

Whatever it is, I just want to know. I think I deserve an answer after so long. KNN.

First Audition Of The Year!

Posted by Ruok On February - 23 - 2006

Yesterday, I went for my first audition for Oh Sex. Woot! On another note, seeing how it took until February for my first audition, does say something about my career. *sigh* Anyway, back to happy thoughts!

I received a call the week before and was surprised to hear an unfamiliar production house asking me to go to the audition. When I arrived there, I realised it was a casting director whom I previously auditioned for (but failed to clinch the role) who called me. She had still remembered me from the last time round ( *ahem* must have given her a good impression :P ) so had invited me down for a whopping three roles to audition for this time round. Woohoo!

The roles were for a station manager, an autistic man and an ah beng. Although the ah beng role had more screen time, I agreed to audition for the other roles as well, as its not like me to pass up on an opportunity to act. I think she was suitably impressed with what I could offer her for all the three roles, but I’m really hoping to land the ah beng one hehehe. Why? Because I think his scenes are funnny lor, and damn, I really missed doing comedy.

Even though the time in which I get to act was very short, I felt very invigorated after the audition. I think I have mentioned this before, that even though the duration is short, auditions are a very much welcomed shot in the arm for me. And this audition, coming after such a long dry season, does wonders to my parched soul.

When I found out that the casting director was freelance as well, I decided to show her my showreel. When it came to the “True Courage” scene, she was wincing (no surprises) at my character’s actions and I wondered if she too would feel that I’m more suitable for villian roles. To my surprise, she only said that I was very versatile, hehehe. *beam*

I think that really made my day. I’ve got another audition this Saturday, and its a gangster role. Wish me luck!

4 Closure Part Deux

“Vince, this is Liz! Call me back, its urgent!!” goes an excited Liz on my voicemail.

“I have just been told we won the Special Mention Prize at the Fest! So can you make it to the awards tonight?”
WTF?!!! Of course can lah!

Some two hours later, after I discarded my “Clark Kent” disguise, I rushed down to Substation to meet Liz. Dave, too had excitedly called me all the way from Oz, and told me that we were in the running for the Voice Award (Audience Choice) as well. “Man,” he exclaimed, “We were supposed to close the chapter on this one already.”
“Well,” I told him, “looks like we are closing it with a happy ending, hehehe.”

They explained to me what the award meant. The Fest had two best short film awards, one was the best overall short (Special Jury Prize) and the other one was the best overall local short (Special Mention Prize). That meant that our entry was the deemed the best S’porean short in the Fest! Wahahaha!

They also shortlist 6 shorts (from a total of 34) for audience choice, and we were the only S’porean entry! Wahahaha!

4 Closure

Posted by Ruok On February - 16 - 2006

After we attended the screening, Dave bought the rest of us some drinks. We talked about the audience reaction to the redux version agreed that the important thing was not whether this was the best version or not, but that this version was one where more people got what we were trying to say. As we raised our glasses together, he told me that its time to close the chapter liow and as a result, he would not be submitting it for the Portugal film festival.

In a way, I understood his need to move on. This was after all his first short and I think we have stayed on this joyride long enough. We did not talk about our expectation of winning something from the festival, but its not because we didn’t think we will win or that we are good enough to win. The way I look at it, I think we are just jaded… it is after all the third film festival that its been in.

We stayed on till the band finished its last song, “Sexual Healing”. Makes you wonder how you got hurt in the first place eh? ;)
